Traits and dreams

You pick 2 of 10 traits and one dream when you make your character. Most traits make one skill grow 15% faster or slow down how fast one need drops. The dream is your long goal for that life: there are 4 to choose from, and the Goals tab tracks how close you are.

How traits work

Traits are the second step of making your person, right after the look. You tap 2 cards; tapping a third swaps out the older pick. Once you move in, they are fixed for that life. You can see them any time in the character panel: tap your portrait at the bottom left and look under Traits on the Needs tab.

Picking two traits at character creation: Owambe Royalty and Silver Tongue chosen.

A trait can do three kinds of thing:

  • Boost a skill. Every bit of XP you earn in that skill is multiplied by 1.15. That covers XP from your shifts, from practice at home and from activities in town.
  • Change how fast a need drops. Needs fall by a set amount every hour, at home or away, and a trait can slow that down (or, in one case, speed it up).
  • Help your jokes land. One trait adds to your chance when you Joke Around with someone in a venue.

See the jobs guide for how skills tie to promotions, and needs and health for what happens when a need runs low.

Every trait and what it does

The middle column is the game's own description. The right column is what the game actually changes today, worked out from its rules.

The base rates the need traits change

Without any trait or perk, each need drops by this much an hour:

How fast each need drops an hour
NeedDrop an hour
Hunger10
Energy8
Fun8
Social6
Hygiene6
Bladder8

While you are away, needs keep dropping but stop at 20. Below 20 in any need, your work and XP take a 20% cut, so a slower-dropping need is worth more than it looks.

How boosts stack

Skill XP bonuses multiply together. The ones in the game are:

Every source of extra skill XP
SourceCoversXP
A trait tied to the skillThat one skill+15%
Two traits tied to the same skillThat one skill+32%
๐Ÿชต Ajepako startEvery skill+20%
๐Ÿฎ Reads by Lantern perk (19 โœจ)Every skill+15%
Trait + Ajepako + perkThat one skill+59%

Need traits stack with need perks the same way. Starch & Iron with the Two-Bucket Bath perk, for example, takes Hygiene from 6 to 3.3 an hour. Perks are covered in wishes and perks.

Clashes and overlaps

  • Same skill: ๐ŸŽ‰ Owambe Royalty and ๐ŸŒ™ Moonchild both boost Dance. Taken together you get +32% Dance XP, but no career pays for Dance, so it is a hobby pair.
  • Owambe Royalty has a real downside. Fun drains faster, which its party and dance bonus makes up for only if you party and dance. For Dance XP alone, Moonchild gives the same boost with no catch.
  • Slow Motion and the work penalty. Its slower Energy drop is handy, since you can't start a shift or gig below 10 Energy, but every shift earns 10% less performance, so promotions come later.
  • Skills with no trait: Comedy, Photography. You can still learn them; nothing speeds them up except the Ajepako start and the all-skills perk.
  • Don't pair a drain with an empty slot. If you take Owambe Royalty, plan for more fun in your day: a radio at home, a night out, a game at the viewing centre.

Best traits for each career

Your career skill is the one that matters most. Shifts give XP in it, and each promotion needs a certain level of it. The top rung of every career needs level 7, which is 1,800 XP in total. So the first pick is simple; the second is about comfort.

Top pay is what one shift pays at the final rung, before tax.

Why these partners:

  • ๐Ÿงผ Starch & Iron cuts Hygiene loss by 30% with no downside. Fewer baths means more time for shifts and practice.
  • ๐Ÿ˜ด Slow Motion cuts Energy loss by 25%. Energy gates work, so this keeps you shift-ready longer. Keep in mind the warning above.
  • A second skill trait from another career is wasted unless you plan to switch jobs. You can only hold one job at a time.

Every dream

The dream is the third step of making your person. You pick one, and it shows at the top of the Goals tab with a progress bar.

Every dream and what it asks
DreamWhat it asksProgress bar shows
๐Ÿ‘” Top BossClimb to level 5, the last rung, in any job.Your current job level out of five.
๐Ÿก Agege MoneybagsNet worth of โ‚ฆ1,000,000.Your net worth against the target.
๐ŸŽค Pen Cinema HeadlinerMusic at level 10.Your Music level out of 10.
๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ Talk of Oko-Oba4 people at Best friend (relationship 80+).Not measured yet: the bar stays empty.
Not in the game yet: ๐Ÿฆ„ Agege Unicorn, which asks you to win investors for a startup. Startup investment isn't in the game yet, so this dream is hidden from character creation.

What counts towards each one

  • Top Boss: any career will do. You need level 7 in the career skill and 100% performance for the last promotion. Ajebota starts every new job at level 2, so they begin one rung closer.
  • Agege Moneybags: net worth in the Bank app is your cash in both wallets, plus what you paid for the furniture you own, minus what you still owe on a loan. Businesses you own are not counted in it today.
  • Pen Cinema Headliner: Music level 10 is 4,800 XP in total.
  • Talk of Oko-Oba: relationships go up when you Greet (+4), Yarn (+6) or Joke Around (+8, or โˆ’2 if it falls flat). Best friend starts at 80. The Goals tab doesn't measure this dream yet, so tap a person to see where you stand with them.

What happens when you reach your dream

Today, nothing is paid out and nothing ends. When you reach the goal, the bar in the Goals tab reads 100% and you keep playing the same life. The dream is a direction, not a finish line. Pick the one that matches how you like to play, not the one that sounds richest.

Best traits for each dream

๐Ÿ‘” Top Boss

Your career's skill trait plus Starch & Iron. Every promotion is gated by skill level, so +15% XP is the fastest route up. Pick the career first, then the trait.

๐Ÿก Agege Moneybags

Tech's top rung pays the most per shift (โ‚ฆ90,700), so ๐Ÿ’ป Tech Brain with Starch & Iron is the straight wage route to โ‚ฆ1,000,000. Cash is what counts, so spend carefully.

๐ŸŽค Pen Cinema Headliner

๐ŸŽถ Melody Head is the only Music trait. Pair it with the DJ career, whose shifts pay Music XP, and practise at home on a guitar or turntables between shifts.

๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ Talk of Oko-Oba

๐Ÿ˜ Silver Tongue adds 10 points to every joke and raises Charisma, which adds 3 more per level. Landed jokes build friendship fastest.

Worked example: the music dream

A perfect shift (all 4 tasks handled well) gives 60 XP in your career skill. With ๐ŸŽถ Melody Head, a DJ gets 69 Music XP from one. Reaching level 10 from nothing takes about 70 perfect shifts. At 4 shifts a week that is roughly 18 weeks on shifts alone. An Ajepako with the same trait gets 83 XP a shift and needs about 58. Practice at home fills the gaps on days off.

Worked example: one best friend

Greet, Yarn and Joke Around each have their own 30-second wait with the same person. If the joke lands, one round of all three adds 18 to your relationship, so about 5 good rounds take a stranger to Best friend. Your joke chance starts at 60%, then goes up with Charisma, with how much they like you, with Silver Tongue (+10) and with the Greets Everybody perk (+12). It never goes above 95%. See friends and multiplayer for more.

Quick checklist at character creation

  • Decide your first career (the jobs guide has every wage).
  • Take the trait that boosts that career's skill.
  • Take Starch & Iron or Slow Motion for the second slot, unless you want a hobby skill.
  • Choose the dream that fits the career: Top Boss works with any of them.
  • Remember both choices last the whole life. See the two starts for how your start changes things.

Questions

Can I change my traits or dream later?

No. Both are set while you make your character and stay for that life. Only a new life lets you pick again, and the old character retires with everything they owned.

Do two traits that boost the same skill stack?

Yes. Each one multiplies your XP by 1.15, so two of them give ร—1.32 on that skill.

What do I get for completing my dream?

Nothing is paid out today. Your progress bar in the Goals tab fills to 100% and your life carries on as normal.

Which trait is best overall?

The one that boosts your career skill, because shifts are where most of your XP and all of your wages come from. Starch & Iron is the safest second pick: a real saving and no catch.

Why is the Agege Unicorn dream missing from character creation?

It needs startup funding, which is not in the game yet. It is hidden so nobody can pick a dream they cannot reach.

Do traits affect pay?

Not directly. They speed up the skill your career needs, which gets you promoted sooner, and promotion is what raises pay.
